Driven to Drink
I totally lost it at work yesterday.
Sandra, my former boss, was on me from the get-go. We have an educational reimbursement program, and there's 1 part of it that the CEO told me to over-see almost a year ago.
Through a company named CUNA, we can take on-line tutorials that cover a broad range of topics, as relates to credit unions. We have had this program with them since at least the early 90's, and as of this year, have been requiring the Board of Directors to take a bunch of classes over their multi-year terms (it used to be voluntary). The CEO decided that she wanted me to administer the on-line stuff & keep track of what the Board was taking, and to order new classes for them every other month or so.
There's also 2 tracks of classes that employees of all levels can take, and the CEO wanted me to keep track of all that too, but we actually haven't had too many people taking advantage of that.
Anyways....the employees, before they take any class, are supposed to submit an Educational Reimbursement Request form & have it approved before they even sign up for any type of classes. Usually, with school based, or other on-line programs, the employee pays everything up front, and then once they pass the class with a C or better, the credit union pays them back for whatever they spent on tuition & books (to a limit of $2,000 annual). However, it seems that CUNA has a slightly different way of doing things. They will bill you as soon as you sign up for a class, not after you finish it and take the test. There was some confusion on my part with this....it was my understanding that CUNA wouldn't bill us until after the class was completed....but that's neither here nor there.
Former Boss-Lady didn't really know what was going on with the CUNA stuff....and didn't think she had the complete picture of who was doing what, and what we had authorized & paid for. So, I took all the folders from her & proceeded to update & organize everything.....as well as updating a spreadsheet that she was using to keep track of everyone who had been taking any sort of classes since 2000. The sheet had a few missing holes in it, as well as very little info for 2005, so I updated it & put the whole thing in a more readable format.
Former Boss-Lady, after seeing my finished results.....got pissed at me for wasting my time, and for changing the format of her spreadsheet. She said that she was "deeply offended" that I would just go and change something of her. She said she realizes that she's leaving, but that doesn't mean that I have any right to change anything, until after she's gone....and that anytime anyone gives her spreadsheets or documents to work from, she never changes them....
After she got done, I left her office & went back to my desk. I took a few deep breaths and tried to calm myself down.....but it didn't work very well.
I went into the CEO's office (my new boss) and just burst into tears. I told her that I was sick & tired of the way Sandra treated me & that I wasn't going to put up with it for much longer. I said that this has been going on for a long time, but that it's gotten worse since I was promoted & re-assigned out from under her.
I told the CEO that Former Boss-Lady talks to me like she thinks I'm an idiot, and that she'll tell me to take on a project....and when I ask her how she wants things handled, she'll give me no input....but when I come up with a plan of action, she totally shoots it down...and still refuses to give me any input.
My latest was Key Control. We have a whole lot (maybe 100) of keys that we're not sure where they go to...if they go to anything. Former Boss-Lady wanted me to find out where the keys went to, label the ones I could find matches for & throw out the rest. My 1st thought was to go through the keys, sort them out by what already had labels & what didn't....and then see if any of the keys had engraved codes on them that matched any of the codes on our Key Log. The rest I could generally figure out by type. All Steel keys went to All Steel desks & file cabinets, HON keys to HON cabinets....ect.....Well Former Boss-Lady didn't want me to do it that way. It seems that she pretty much wanted me to either psychically divine the information of what equipment/doors the keys went to....or to throw the keys out. So, Friday I dived into the project & was matching up the miscellaneous/unknown keys to a bunch of other keys that we actually have labeled and organized....and ended up finding matches for over 20 keys by then end of the day....some of the keys I found matches to, were assumed to be lost....and if I had just thrown them out....we might have ended up having to re-key the locks (kinda expensive) sometime in the future if no one in the company actually had a key to the locks.
So anyways....I'm telling the CEO all of this, and I'm telling her that Former Boss-Lady has been drowning in work, but refuses to ask my help with anything but the most basic stuff. She keeps saying she doesn't have time to train me.....I said to the CEO, I'm 35-y/o, and college educated....I'm not an idiot & I don't need a whole lot of 'training'. I pointed out the fact that she & The Exec. VP have both given me projects over the years w/o a lot of explanations & have just expected me to figure it out...and have known that if I didn't understand something that I would ask for help....I said 'as far as I know, you 2 haven't had problems with how I accomplish your projects...'
CEO said that as of 10/31, Former Boss-Lady shouldn't be giving me direct assignments anyway, that my work orders should be coming from the CEO, and that if Former Boss-Lady wants me to do anything, she should ask the CEO 1st.
CEO said that she was going to find out what projects Former Boss-Lady is working on...what her timeline is for finishing them, and if she wants me to take anything over, she'll just give it to me, and let me handle it however I see fit.
I also mentioned to the CEO that if she hadn't promoted me, that things had gotten so bad...that I was ready to put my resume online & start looking for another job. She said she pretty much figured that, and that was part of the reason she promoted me & re-assigned me.
The final thing I touched on was my Former Boss-Lady's always saying that I have no people skills. I said to the CEO that she doesn't even begin to know about my people skills. I said that for months I had been biting my tongue & swallowing my frustration & anger....and that she had no idea of just how bad my temper was & how frustrated and upset I have been. I said if that is a lack of people skills.......
And the title of this......one 6-shot mudslide type drink over ice after I got home.....and anyone who knows me.....knows that I rarely drink.
