Things to Think About
Payroll for City of SF, PUC
Known Pros
1. At least $6,500.00 per year more than I currently make.
2. 10 minute drive to/from BART, 80 minutes round-trip on BART, BART is practically on their doorstep.
3. More than likely, more work....their payroll is upwards of 1500 people, and deals with at least 15 different Union contracts.
4. New people, new situations.
Known Cons
1. I'd be a small fish in a very large pond.
2. From what little they told me about the job.....I'd being doing part of payroll, and that's it....doing HR doesn't even enter the picture unless you are higher up on the ladder.
3. New people, new situations.
Current Job
My actual title is Human Resources Assistant. In the larger corporate areas, this is actually an entry level HR position. In my company....it seems to be a lot more than that.
I look at my job as a 3 layer cake. The bottom layer is entry level work & entry level knowledge. The middle is intermediate level & knowledge, and the top would be a management position.
The middle position, at my company, is called a Generalist. The biggest difference in the 2 positions is that the Generalist is in charge of posting classifieds, recruiting, interviewing, orientations & some training.
If I look at everything as objectively as I can....I'd say my job is 90+% bottom layer, 50% middle layer & maybe 20% top layer of the cake. I process payroll from beginning to end. I process just about everything to do with our benefits. I process employee terminations & COBRA. I keep up with all the changes in Wage & Labor laws. I update the Employee Handbook annually. I've posted classifieds & reviewed resumes (but I haven't gone beyond that). I'm usually the 1st person the other employees come to when they have questions about their job requirements, benefits, payroll, or anything else that is vaguely HR related. If I don't have the answers, I'll get them, or I'll send you to someone who has them.
The 2 biggest problems that I have with my job is that I do not feel that I have enough to do.....and I feel that my boss (maybe 50% of the time) treats me poorly.
The CEO has assured me that my position will be changing & taking on greater responsibilities....and my boss has been saying she'll retire this year.
The biggest pro....I can use what I have learned as a broad base to work from....I have a good beginning-intermediate background in HR....and if I choose to go further, I could. Not to mention, that I am important to my company. I know this, and they know this. I'm not sure I could be happy moving into a position that locks me into 1 sub-section of a large field....where I'm just another nameless face.
So, what I have to work out, if I am even offered the SF PUC job....
Do I go for more $$, but a potentially boring job.....
or
Do I believe that things really will change at my current company??
